The simplest way to mark out a straight line over a long distance on a wall or a floor is to snap a chalk line. Take a piece of string that is slightly longer than the distance to be marked out and rub it with chalk along its entire length. Attach each end to a nail. Making sure that the string is taut, and pluck it like a bowstring. The string will snap back to leave a clear chalk line. When snapping exceptionally long distances, press the centre of the string firmly down on the wall or floor and snap each half of the length of string in turn.
