When building a low wall, lay the first course crossways along the foundation and then build up the subsequent courses. Bricks laid in this way are known in the trade as ¦’headers, and provide additional strength for the base of the wall. When building up the subsequent courses of the wall, always make sure that the vertical joins in one course do not coincide with the course immediately above it. They should line up with those in the next but one course. This technique is known as bonding.
