When using a sanding machine. Always wear a belt fitted round the back of the waist and attached to the handle to combat the powerful pulling action of the machine. Prepare the room for sanding by removing all furniture. Remember also to remove any projecting nails and tacks, or to punch them below the surface. One exposed nail or tack is enough to rip the abrasive sheet on the machine, or even damage the machine’s roller. Carry out the first sanding at an angle of 45 across the boards, using coarse paper, and the second at the same angle, but working in the opposite direction. This will help eliminate any high spots in the floor’s surface. Make the third and the fourth sandings down the length of the boards, working with the grain and using medium paper and fine paper respectively. Overlap each sanding slightly.
