To get an even mix when mixing the ingredients for mortar or concrete. First shovel out the amount of sand required on to a clean concrete or boarded surface. Then add the correct proportions of the remaining ingredients. Turn the mixture at least three times. Finishing with a pyramid shape. Scrape out the sides of the pyramid to leave a hole in the centre.
Pour approximately three-quarters of the required amount of water into the hole. Shovelling from the outside edges of the mixture towards the centre, continue turning the mix. Adding small quantities of water until the correct consistency is reached.
Never mix more mortar than can be used up within two hours. As retempering with water is unsatisfactory.
