Always screw direct into joists when fixing into ceilings – fixings screwed into plasterboard will not hold. To avoid unnecessary damage to the ceiling, first try to locate the joists by tapping the ceiling. If this fails, measure from a structural wall to the joist nails in the room immediately above. Allowing, if necessary, for the thickness of skirting board upstairs. Or cornice on the downstairs ceiling, fix the position of the joists by measuring from the same wall below.
