Always lay concrete on a solid foundation, or it will crack. First. Make sure that the ground is level by pummelling it down hard and then pack the aggregate for the sub-base down tightly on it. Lay out a frame using timbers at least 25 mm 1 in thick and subdivide this into 3m 10ft square sections, using softwood boards. Wedge both the frame and boards. Remove the boards and frame once the concrete has set and fill the gaps with asphalt. Because the asphalt remains pliable beneath its hard surface, the concrete is able to expand without cracking.
