Proprietary underlay pads are the most convenient form of underlay for stair carpeting. Make sure that the pads extend at least 50 mm 2 in beyond the edge of each tread nosing of the staircase. If the pad is fitted flush with the nosing, the carpet will quickly wear along the edges of each tread. Align the pads below each nosing, and secure them with tacks or staples on the treads and risers.
