When fitting electric cables to skirting, or around door frames. Use proprietary plastic clips that are designed to fit the exact width of cable laid. First tack a clip, on one end of a long length of cable. To the skirting at the plug point-allowing at least 125mm excess cable for fitting to the plug later. Then, running the cable between the thumb and forefinger. Pull it hard to get it taut and fix a second clip 30cm 1 ft farther along the skirting. Continue like this – pulling the cable tight and fixing clips at every 30cm 1ft – until the appliance to which the cable is to be attached is reached.
Cut off the cable, making an extra allowance for the distance from the last clip to the appliance. Plus another 125mm 5in excess. Cut back the excess amounts of cable at each end and wire up.
Never work the other way round – cutting the length of cable first. Wiring up and then clipping it into position. This usually leads to unsightly bulges between each clip because the cable is too slack.
