When cutting a carpet to fit around a projecting wall, always allow a little extra so that the carpet will fit tightly around the obstacle. If the carpet is cut exactly to the line of the side walls, a gap will almost certainly appear. Using a trimming knife, start the cuts at the corners of the projection and slant the cuts inwards at a slight angle to the vertical. Then fold the carpet back and. Using the back of the blade, press the carpet firmly into the angles of the wall and floor. Cutting through the pile, trim off the surplus carpet around the projection and finally along the main wall.
