When building a small retaining wal1 in a garden, ensure that it has a uniform slope along its length by using a plumb line held in a simply made frame to check the angle of the slope. Fit three lengths of 75 mm 3 in by 25 mm/1 in batten together, setting the back upright at the angle required, and fitting the top and bottom battens square and parallel with each other. Drill a hole through the top batten for the plumb line and mark where it lines up on the bottom batten. Place the frame against the wall, check the position of the plumb bob against the mark and repeat the process at intervals along the wall. If the angle is uniform, the plumb bob should line up with the mark on each occasion.
